Mangalore, Jun 22: The BJP on Friday June 22 staged 'jail bharo’ protest amidst heavy rain at Pumpwell circle here, as part of the day-long nationwide agitation against the UPA goverment for hiking prices of essential commodities. It also marked the culmination of 'Jan Sangarsh Abhiyan' which began on June 7.
Lashing out at the corrupt practices of the UPA government, Capt Ganesh Karnik, MLC said that the central ruling party had made the life of the common man miserable by constantly increasing the prices of essential commodities and petrol products.
Taking the UPA government to task, Karnik said that with wrong economic policies, illegal storage of food items, rise in the interest rate, and exporting of essential products to foreign countries instead of providing them to the citizens, the ruling government had completely failed to keep the public happy.
Yogish Bhat and Shrikar Prabhu also addressed the protestors. They threatened to continue the protest until the UPA government brings down the prices.
BJP leaders Amithakala, Shakila Rao, Praveen, former mayors, Raghunath Kini, Surekha, Sudhir Shetty Kannur, Shakunthala and others were present.
Several BJP leaders and party workers courted arrest during the day-long agitation. Apart from Mangalore, the opposition party also organized public meetings, protests and street marches in different parts of the country to create awareness among the public on these issues.
As BJP party workers staged the protest on the road, traffic was disrupted for sometime.
