Udupi: Chapter on Belapu Gram Panchayat Included in Class V Textbook

Udupi, Jun 22: In a move that has brought honour and recognition to Belapu gram panchayat here, the state education department has included a chapter on the extraordinary achievement of the panchayat in rural development in Class V social studies text books this academic year.
The state textbook committee has prepared the book for the first semester Kannada medium under Mysore division for the academic year 2012 – 13.
The chapter covers rural development, cleanliness and hygiene standards achieved and maintained by Belapu gram panchayat. A study team travelled across Belapu village in order to gather an elaborative report for the purpose. It has been included in the text book from page number 69 – 76.
The chapter gives information on total number of villages across the nation, total population, farming, issues of rural people, the measures taken by the state administration and the rural empowerment achieved by Belapu gram panchayat. The panchayat is projected as a model for all, having bagged state and national awards for its commendable work.
"It is a great honour for Belapu gram panchayat. Similar chapters will also be included in the textbooks of Urdu, English, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi by the respective states," informed Belapu rural development visionary Deviprasad Shetty.

The textbook also mentions Netravati river, how Mangalore got its name, about Pilikula Nisargadhama, Kadri Manjunata temple, StAloysius chapel, Ullal dargah, Venkataramana temple, Thousand Pillar Temple at Moodbidri, Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala, Kukke Sri Kshetra Subramanya and Narahari mountain in Bantwal.
On Udupi, it makes a mention of Sri Krishna Temple, Ashta Maths, Manipal, St Mary’s Island, temple town of Barkoor, Nandikeshwar Temple, Bahubali monolithic sculpture at Karkala, Kunjaru Pajaka Kshetra, Kaup light house, Maravante beach, Kollur Mookambika temple and other key religious centers in Udupi taluk.
The information on achievers in folklore, Yakshagana, cock-fight, Kambala, regional folk art etc are explained in the textbook. Achievers including Syndicate Bank founder Dr T M A Pai, General K S Timmayya, Field Marshal Kariyappa, former CM D Devaraj Aras, freedom fighters Kudmul ranga Rao, Karnad Sadashiv Rao, Kille Narayan Shetty, Hiriyadka Ramaraya Mallya, Ramakrishna Karant, Attavar Yellappa, Canara Bank founder Ammebal Subba Rao, Corporation Bank founder Haji Abdulla Saheb, Ullal Srinivas Mallya and others have been featured in the textbook.
