Bangalore, June 19 (IBNS): A French diplomat charged with raping his three-and-a-half year-old daughter in Bangalore was arrested on Tuesday produced in a court where an angry bystander slapped him while he being taken inside.
The official was arrested after Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that he was not given any diplomatic immunity.
A case was registered against Pascal Mazurier, Chief of Joint Chancellerie at the French Consulate in Bangalore, after a complaint from his wife, Suja Jones Mazurier, that he sexually assaulted their three and a half year old daughter.
He was first detained for questioning on Thursday night following the complaint, but could not be arrested due to his diplomatic immunity.
The foreign ministry of France also issued a statement on Tuesday.
"We have been informed of the allegation against one of our employees posted at the Consulate General of France in Bangalore and have since been in contact with the local authorities. An investigation is underway. We cannot, therefore, comment on this at this stage," it said.
The statement said "the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations (1963) does not provide for immunity of jurisdiction for acts committed outside the exercise of consular duties (Article 43)."
According to his wife, Mazurier “raped” their daughter on June 13 when he was with the child inside a locked bedroom for several hours.
The 39-year-old has denied the charges. The police are verifying the evidence and analysing medical records.
After his arrest he was first taken for a medical examination in accordance with the routine procedure.
Meanwhile, Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights chairperson Nina Nayak told media that they demanded financial assistance for the family from the French government.
She said both the mother and the child were counselled.
