Bantwal, Jun 12: No one knows why the time has not come to broaden the city roads at Vittal. The assurances given in the past by all deputy commissioners who had taken charge of Dakshina Kannada has not been realized so far.
Despite the town council' planning to broaden the roads in Vittal, the works have not been carried out in widening the heavily congested intersection. The traffic snarls are causing hardship to motorists, pedestrians, and shopkeepers.
The previous deputy commissioner (DC) Ponnuraj offered the assurance of beginning work within 15 days during his two visits. Nonetheless, a few shopkeepers voluntarily vacated their shops in order to pave the way for beginning work at the earliest, butthe district administration has not taken any concrete steps in this regard.
The new DC Dr Chennappa Gowda, during his recent visit, addressing the media, said that three influential shopkeepers are adamant about not vacating their shops that had to be demolished for broadening of road works. Meanwhile, the district administration will convene a meeting with people' representatives, department officials, and shopkeepers, as soon as the code of conduct on legislative council polls gets over on Thursday June 14.
However, the people still find it hard to believe Dr Chennappa as all DCs were generous in their assurances in the past. Only time will tell whether the plans are implemented or not!
