Bhatkal: Groups Clash over Construction of Road, 11 Arrested, Many Hurt

Bhatkal, Jun 10: Clashes erupted on Saturday June 9 at Murdeshwar near here between two groups, resulting in the arrest of 11 persons.
The clash erupted between Namadhari and Moger communities reportedly over a dipute regarding the construction of Basti road in Matadahitlu area in Murdeshwar.
Nearly 15 persons were injured, among whom one is said to be critical. He was later taken to Manipal in Udupi for advanced treatment.
Earlier, each of the two groups had reached a compromise that they would let a part of the land in their respective areas for the construction of the Bast road. However, the Namadhari group contended that the Moger community had not adhered to the agreement and instead built a compoud wall obstructing the road construction. On Thursday June 7, the wall was demolished by unknown persons, and when the Mogers tried to rebuild it, they were allegedly stopped by the other community.
Heated arguments followed between the two communities, ultimately leading to clashes. Stones were pelted and many were injured. They were admitted to various hospitals in Bhatkal and Murdeshwar.
Following the incident, security has been beefed up in the area and additional police forced have been deployed. The situation has been brought under control.
Complaints were lodged by the members of both communities against each other.
The arrested were lodged in Karwar jail.
