Madrid, Jun 4 (IANS): Celta Vigo joined near neighbours Deportivo la Coruna in being promoted to Spain's La Liga after a gap of five years.
Celta's 0-0 draw at home to Cordoba means that the side from the region of Galicia return to the top flight of Spanish football after five seasons in the second division.
The side coached by Paco Herrera kicked off needing a draw for promotion, while a draw also served Cordoba to enter in the playoffs for the third and final promotion place. With a draw benefiting both sides it was no surprise that the result was a dull game with few scoring chances, Xinhua reported.
Meanwhile Celta's rivals for a direct playoff place, Valladolid, suffered a shock 1-3 home defeat to Guadalajara and will now face Cordoba in the semi-final of the playoffs.
The other semifinal sees Madrid based Alcorcon take on Hercules from Alicante.
