Mubarak Sentenced to Life for Role in Murder of Protesters

Cairo, Jun 2 (PTI): Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was today sentenced to life in prison after a court here found him guilty of complicity in the killing of protesters during a popular uprising against his 30-year rule last year.

84-year-old ailing former dictator, who was wheeled into the courtroom, got life imprisonment along with his former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly.

Six former police commanders were acquitted by the court, which also dropped corruption charges against Mubarak's two sons Alaa and Gamal.

Over 800 protesters had been killed during the 18-day revolt following which Mubarak was ousted on February 11, 2011.

Handing down the sentence to Mubarak and al-Adly, Judge Ahmed Refaat said that the 10-month trial had been a fair one.

He said Egyptian people had suffered 30 years of darkness under Mubarak's rule.
The Interior Ministry had taken special measures to secure the premises of the court, where the trial had taken place.

The wall around the police academy in New Cairo, a satellite city around the capital, had been raised to four metres in addition to another metre of barbed wire.

The court had also refused to issue any new permits to cover the trial and kept the coverage exclusive for state-owned TV.

After the verdict was announced, scuffles between rival groups erupted in the court.

    It is a terrible reality that the autocrats down through the history never took time to read, what happened to all the former autocrats in the world? Hardly many of them had a normal death died in bukers-jails-roadside and killed like killing wild animals. Mr. Mubarak used to wear custom-made suit of $ 4000.00 while the people in the slums of Egypt were greatly suffering. Everything in life has a pay day!

    The former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison. He was found guilty of complicity in the killing of protesters during a popular uprising against his 30-year rule last year.

    Mubarak who is 84 years old suffers from various diseases and he was wheeled into the courtroom where he received his sentence.

    During the revolt against the dictatorial regime around 800 people lost their life. Judge Ahmed Refaat said that the 10-month trial had been a fair one.
    The question is can a trial be really fair when a dictator is sued because of committing crimes against human rights?

    I doubt strongly and cannot believe in any fairness but the fact is that for 30years Egyptians were ruled by a dictator and Egyptians never had a free media, an independent judiciary, independent trade unions or freedom of speech.
    They were defence- and helpless exposed to a tyranny.

    I remember the time when the revolution took place in Eastern Germany and East and West got united, people danced in the streets and kissed one another driven by joy and happiness.

    Eastern Germany was governed by Erich Honecker from 1971 to 1989. The political authorities of Germany tried to sue him.
    As the date set for Erich Honecker´s trial approached, in November 1992, there were almost daily reports of his impending end.
    Many hoped that he would die before his trial. There was general relief when his trial was suspended because of his health and he was allowed to leave for Chile in 1993.

    I mentioned that as an example how democracy works with an independent judiciary. Erich Honecker was terminally ill and it should go without saying that a ill person like Mubarak should not have been sentenced.
    There is no doubt that he committed crimes against humanity but the judges should have considered his deteriorating health.

    This would have been the way a constitutional state would have spoken.

    Rajesh G....I did not mention his corruptions and hoarded ill gotten wealth.His two sons are also under scanner for various scams.What is overnight Villain? Every country has it's own set up.Some are in democracy and some are in Kingdoms.It is not peeping as you termed because we are in 20 th century?

    IT IS HARD TO FIND A MAN TO HANG A MAN LIKE MUBARAK OR A FINGER THAT CAN SHOOT A BULLET INTO HIM AS PART OF FIRING SQUAD AS ALL OF THEM ARE SINNERS AND CORRUPT.
    FOLKS PLEASE BE PREPARED FOR A WORSE FREE EGYPT WHERE PEOPLE MAY HAVE ONE MORE MOVEMENT TO BRING HIM OUT OF JAIL.

    Ismail K. Perinje, How much of freedom and democracy are you enjoying in KSA? Secondly Is it right of you (& me) to ask or decide what punishment he should get?. When are we going to hang Kasab & Afzal Guru even after getting convicted?

    This guy had every opportunity to run away from the country. In fact Saudi Arabia had given him political asylum also. But he stayed back in his country like a real man to fight the battle. 30 years he ruled the country and overnight he became villain?
    In all the 30 years he has not done anything good for his country?
    I do not agree. In fact they should have allowed him to gracefully live his old age and let god decide his punishment.
