Sheila Dikshit may consider reducing VAT on Petrol

New Delhi, May 25 (IANS): Hinting at a possible reduction in petrol prices in the national capital, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Friday said the Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol may be reduced by Monday.

"When the petrol prices were increased last time we had reduced the VAT on it, so we are thinking on the same lines and will let you know on Monday," Dikshit told reporters here.

State-run oil marketing firms Wednesday announced the biggest ever, single-shot hike of about Rs.7.50 a litre in the petrol prices.

The revised price of petrol in the capital is Rs.73.18 a litre, up from Rs.65.64 a litre - a difference of Rs.7.54.

Protests rocked parts of the country Thursday against the hike with the Opposition denouncing it as an assault on the common man.
