Santiago, May 17 (IANS/EFE): Spain's Eosol Energy plans to build a $615 million solar energy project in Tocopilla, a town in northern Chile.
The project will have generating capacity of 192.6 MW, the company said in an environmental impact statement.
Power produced at the solar energy park will be sold to the Norte Grande Interconnected System, which supplies northern Chile.
The region is home to the Atacama desert and extensive mining operations.
"The project seeks to leverage the renewable resources in the area for the production of clean energy, helping reduce power generation from the current conventional polluting sources," Eosol Energy said in its filing with environmental regulators.
Eosol Energy has completed solar energy projects in Spain, France and Mexico.
