Generator Explodes in F1 Spanish GP

Madrid, May 14 (IANS): A generator exploded resulting in a fire when the Williams team were celebrating the win of Pastor Maldonado in the Spanish Grand Prix.

Many mechanics were hurt in the blaze during the explosion that took place in the back of the pit area, although none of the injuries were serious, reported Xinhua.

Maldonado ended Williams' seven-year drought after he took the historic chequered flag in the Spanish Grand Prix Sunday.

Starting the weekend as a 300-1 outsider, Maldonado became the first Venezuelan to savour the winner's champagne, finishing just 3.1 seconds ahead of home favourite Fernando Alonso in his Ferrari.

For only the second time in F1 - the other occasion in 1983 - there have been five different winners and five different constructors winning the first five races.

Behind the leading duo Kimi Raikkonen in his Lotus was a close-run third. Behind them reigning champion Sebastian Vettel was sixth despite four trips to the pits, including a drive-through penalty for ignoring yellow flags.
