Manchester, May 14 (IANS): Manchester City won their first English football league title in 44 years, scoring two goals in injury-time to beat Queens Park Rangers 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium here Sunday.
City required three points at home, with defending champions Manchester United breathing down its neck, but it needed quite an incredible injury-time fightback as Edin Dzeko and then Sergio Aguero scored in a dramatic victory.
City and United ended the season tied on 89 points but the blue side of Manchester won courtesy a better goal difference.
City dominated the first half with QPR barely getting a touch on the ball. Argentine right-back Pablo Zabaleta opened the scoring in the 39th minute.
Second-half goals from Djibril Cisse and Jamie Mackie for QPR, either side of a Joey Barton red card, seemed to have turned the entire season on its head.
However, with the game going into five minutes of stoppage time, City fashioned an incredible finish to win their first title since 1968.
Arsenal's 3-2 victory over West Brom guaranteed them a third place and Champions League football next season. Their bitter London rivals Tottenham Hotspur took fourth position, ahead of Newcastle United, with a 2-0 win over Fulham.
Tottenham Hotspur though still are not guaranteed a Champions League spot with sixth placed Chelsea taking on Bayern Munich in the finals of this year's tournament.
If the Blues lift the European trophy in Munich's Allianz Arena, then they will get the fourth spot and bump Spurs out of contention.
