Karkala, May 10: Her daughter was killed and her son-in-law, accused of the murder, committed suicide. At 76, she is all alone, with the additional responsibility of taking care of her two orphaned grandchildren.

Korapalu Poojary in the twilight of her life has gone through much sorrow. Her little grandchildren Suraksha (8) and Sushma (7) were orphaned after their father allegedly stabbed his wife to death in a drunken stupor, and later committed suicide.

The incident had been reported by Daijiworld on February 22 earlier this year. In a brave and heart-touching gesture, Shalini (35), the mother of the unfortunate children, had pleaded for her killer husband's life and expressed her last wish that he should not be harmed, even as she lay dying in the hospital. Her husband Sudhakar (36) was found hanging from a tree five days later.

The tragedy left not only the kids orphaned, but even plunged the grandmother into the depths of poverty, helplessness and great sorrow.

Background

Shalini was allegedly stabbed by her alcoholic husband Sudhakar Poojary on the morning of Feb 21. The man had pestered his wife for money and reportedly stabbed her after she refused. He flee from the scene when she collapsed.

The wounded woman was brought to the hospital with the knife still on her abdomen, and doctors had to remove it. However, she could not be saved.

Reportedly, he had purchased a new knife on the previous day with the intention of murdering his soft-spoken and good-natured wife. He stabbed her the next morning when their kids were still sleeping in the same room, it is said.

The incident shocked the villagers, but they were in for further alarm when Sudhakar's body was found hanging from a tree five days later, in a case of suspected suicide.

With both the mother and the father dead, the onus of looking after the two children fell on the aged grandmother.

Shalini was the youngest among the five daughters of the late Kuddu and Korapolu Poojary of Kolejal, Bola district of Karkala. Though she was given in marriage to Sudhakar of Irgaan, they chose to live in her parental house so as to take care of the aged Korapolu Poojary.

Sudhakar worked for a rice mill and was also a daily wager, while Shalini rolled bidi to support the family. He used to come home drunk and batter his wife and children, but Shalini tolerated the pain and kept mum to save the family's honour and in the hope that he would turn over a new leaf someday.

The good-hearted relatives and villagers managed to pool in whatever little they could from their savings for the grandmother to look after the unfortunate kids. At present, the children are in their aunt's (Shalini’s elder sister) house. It is said that the children refused to stay in the grandmother's house where they witnessed the brutal murder of their mother.

But the money collected is hardly enough for day-to-day expenditure, and not at all for the education of the children. Hence, financial support from organizations and well-wishers would be timely.

The children who study in Vidyabigini primary school of Kedinje need the support of generous people for a brighter future.

Just before the incident took place, the family had built a new house in the month of November with the support of relatives and the panchyat. The loans taken for construction of the house are again an added burden to the family.

Organizations and individuals who wish to help the family may can send their contributions to the children's aunt Shantha Poojary, who is the guardian.

    Dear Readers,
Please ensure the funds you send are used for the right cause. If the amount is huge, the children should have the right to use it after the age of 18. It is better to sponsor the children's school fees, clothing and food on a monthly basis. This may seem difficult but the money will be used for the right cause.

    Alwyn, Peter,Lydia,Ashok Bhat,
God bless you all for your humble hearts to bring joy in others life. I myself am doing my bit in such things. I fear supporting in general causes as I wonder will the help really reach the needy, hence prefer directly going and helping the person in need.. Mainly education. When I saw these 2 little angles I was in pain and blindly made some small transfer...the younger one looks like my own daughter. Let us know what we can do. There are so many we can help. So many in need. I remember Mother Tereza's words when somebody asked her how will she help the millions who need help..she replied "one by one"

Only if & when media highlights, then only we realize there are numerous needy people live. Otherwise we vehemently follow Gandhiji’s monkeys. Even in our neighborhood they eat one time meal (can’t even call it a meal, its ganji & pickle), even their children left school midway & starts to tie “beedies”, we are blissfully ignorant. We are ready to take unnecessary risk by hanging out in a crowded train, but when a goonda troubles a hapless victim, we just watch or vacate the place! While contributing 10 rupee to a begging child, we advise him not to beg, as if we donated 10 million rupees and all their problems vanished. And some people are worried just because their contribution reaching the right person or not. But I pray to God to bless me to follow India’s greatest teaching to the world,
Neki Kar aur dariya me daal !!!

First of all thanks to daiji bring up such cases in to light which is helping the deprived. I also appriciate Alwyn Maxim and Peter Peria for the gesture expressed. I too express my sincere thanks to Lydia Lobo for the concern expressed. Since 30 years I am also silently working on such cases. If daiji is taking any initiative in this line, I will offer my service which I consider - a real workship of almighty. For this I do not want any reward, publicity. One suggestion from my end - already there are some NGO's really doing some good work. As per my information "SPOORTHY DHAMA" near Koteshwar, Kundapur Tq taking care of such matters. If Alwyn Maxim, Peter Pereria and Lydia Lobo wants to have more details this organization, please send me your mail-id. At the same I am requesting daiji to prepare article on this NGO "SPOORTHI DHAMA". If any one wants to reach me - please send me mail to ashokb16@yahoo.co.in. Not that I am entitled to, but my humble opinion is that DW starts a Social Work wing towards which all kind hearted readers can contribute. Unselfish, free of obligations (say, retired persons) can devote their time to work towards the betterment of the poor in person while employed readers contribute through donations.

I have studied in one of my subjects related to Service to the Society that NGO, Voluntary Organizations or Relief Agencies are government approved bodies to serve the socio-economically poor. This is because the government cannot reach out to each and every person in need. There are conditions and rewards. Contributions to such institutions entitles the donor of some tax rebate. Perhaps someone who studied BSW or MSW can shed light on this. I am willing to contribute monetarily now and through labour later on.

DW, you have been the savior of several. I have my support if you continue to do it in a wider scale.

The day I read the incident, so upset but prayed for them. Very few people to find like the lady, who beg for her husband that situation. By reading all the comments, I feel, if I take the responsibility to look after the THREE, is it possible ? No need of any fund, any things in help, less paper work n I will take care of them. If it is possible, Daijiworld, can contact with the possibilities.

I have a couple of suggestions if I may
(Option-1)Daijiworld should be responsible to collect the funds and open an FD (or recurring deposit) in the grandmother's name with the 2 children as nominees. Being a senior citizen, she can earn qtly interests and that must be utilised towards the children's upbringing.
(Option-2): Daijiworld should appoint a trusted banker to assist and help in such cases to avoid any doubts in people's minds. I'm sure there will be many honest bankers who will come forward to offer their services to those in need. GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

We've commented quite a number of times to DAIJI to take an initiative to form a FUND FOR CHARITY and this fund will be run by DAIJI with a small commity of HONEST MEMBER'S either retired or working personal's in such a way by fixing some small amount to be collected in monthly basis as membership or something of the sort to collect funds, which will not be a burden to the people taking part in this charity drive and this money can be utilized in emergency charity purpose before any other help arrives.Let the money be accounted and kept open for the member's to view so that there will be no fraud as for the public to complaint.

Answer is very clear.Aunt alos needs money to give proper education, food to kids.I believe DAIJIWORLD and not Aunt or Uncle.Daiji might have done thorough investigation about his incident before publishing. My small contribution will reach them..and please don't think..PLS ACT.

I agree with Lydia Lobo. Instead of sending the amount to the Aunt's account, it would be wiser if Daijiworld could collect the amount and then put it into a fixed account till the children are 20 years. The interest can be utilised for their day to day expenses and education.

Lydia Lobo, i agree with you to an extent,to where we aren't sure if the money will reach the right source when required, but just contemplating may not be a good idea, at times we need to think with our hearts and keep our minds shut. Money is a saviour as well as a curse, we need to understand and establish the right use of it.

Situation is quite complex. What assures the donors that the aunt will look after the kids till they come to age as well as educate them or marry them off ? What if they end up on the streets along with their grandmother once the funds are secure in the aunt's account ?

Isn't it wise to sponsor their education expenses or to arrange with our own bank to send a certain amount every month to the old lady ? I am contemplating !
