Islamabad, May 4 (IANS): Pakistan plans to export 400,000 tonnes of sugar, out of 4.7 million tonnes that it produces, an official said.
"The news about surplus sugar was given to President Asif Ali Zardari during a meeting at the presidency by a delegation of the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association," the president's spokesperson Farhatullah Babar said Thursday.
Association chief Javed A. Kayani said sugar production stood at about 4.7 million tonnes, reported Dawn.
The country's domestic requirement stands at 4.2 million tonnes.
Pakistan was exporting wheat and rice and now sugar would be the third major commodity to be exported.
