Jakarta, May 3 (IANS/AKI): Four members of a gang who posed as police officers to extort money from people have been arrested in the Indonesian capital.
The suspects were held responsible for two cases, in which they had extorted Rupiah 178 million ($19,400) and Rupiah 140 million ($15,250) from their victims, said Jakarta police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto.
The gang members allegedly posed as police officers whenever they met their victims.
The police official said that after a short introduction, the suspects usually took their victims for a ride, and threatened them with weapons and took their money before dumping them at random places.
Police have confiscated cars, firearms and money, he said, adding that four other suspects were at large.
