Udupi, May 2: The villagers of Gandhinagar, Baikady in Brahmavar on Tuesday May 1 stopped the construction of a well that required blasting of rocks using gelatin sticks.
Sources said that Dayanand of Gandhnagara was preparing to carry out the explosion.
The construction of the well was obstructed by large rocks, for which the owner decided to blast them with gelatin sticks. When the news spread across the village, the locals rushed to stop the work as it might have put their lives at risk.
Incidents of gelatin explosion have claimed the lives of many in the outskirts of the city. Gelatin sticks and similar explosives are being used in stone quarrying and construction activities, sources said.
A case has been lodged in the Brahamvar police station. The villagers informed police sub-inspector Girish Kumar about the consequences of blasting rocks with gelatin sticks. They reasoned that there were many houses and Naga Kanika temple close to the well, and hence the risk was more.
The protestors included taluk and gram panchayat members, senior citizens and others.
