Mangalore, Apr 16: Members of Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) jointly held a protest in front of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) here on Monday April 16, demanding the immediate closure of Kudroli abattoir (slaughter house).
The abattoir is owned by the MCC, however, the activists contented that it was illegal and demanded that it should be closed with immediate effect.
Speaking on the occasion, M B Puranik said that the government should follow the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and that the slaughter house has not been constructed according to the provisions of the law.
The protestors, which also included Gurpur Vajradehi Swamiji, said that animals in the slaughter house were being killed in a cruel manner which was against law.
They also pointed out that the MCC has failed to make any improvisations or improvements in the abattoir, as against the requirements of law.
"Every slaughter house should have a meat testing facility which can determine the quality of meat and whether it is fit for consumption. But the Kudroli slaughter house has no such provision," they said, adding that even if the dead cows from Ottinene (where cattle died of consuming toxic waste) were to be brought to the slaughter house for their meat, no one would know.
They also claimed that according to the information they received, even calves are being slaughtered in the abattoir, which is a punishable offence under the Karnataka Prevention Of Cow Slaughter And Cattle Preservation Act, 1964.
A large number of proestors along with leaders Manohar Tulajaram, Sharan Pumpwell, Harish Amtady and Pradeep Pumpwell were present. They also paid a tribute to 'Go Matha' and observed a day-long fast.
