Mangalore: Kadri Park Wears Bridal Look as Flower and Fruit Expo Opens

Mangalore, Mar 31: All roads led to Kadri Park on Friday March 30 with the opening of the vibrant, innovative and eye-catching flower and fruit exhibition. A food festival too was inaugurated at the park on the occasion.
The three-day exhibition has been jointly organized by the department of horticulture, the district administration, the zilla panchayat, and Siri Horticultural Association.
Inaugurating the fruit and flower expo, zilla panchayat president Shailaja Bhat spoke on the merits of gardening and said that it is only healthy but also economical.
ZP CEO Dr K N Vijayprakash noted that the exhibition was well planned and well executed. He informed that the horticulture department plans to open horti-clinics to provide more infomation on plants and fruits, and also plans to go online soon. The state government has released Rs 867 crore for the development of horticulture, he added.
Coastal Development Authority chairman B Nagaraj Shetty, who was the chief guest, called for adoption of scientific farming methods, due to the shortage of labour in the district which in turn was affecting agriculture.
The exhibition displays a wide-ranging variety of flowers and fruits, all arranged in neat and innovating ways. There is a stall featuring faces of well-known personalities like Manmohan Singh and Sadananda Gowda carved in watermelon.
Another part of the exhibition called the 'Festival of India' inaugurated by Nagaraj Shetty, features an array of colourful flowers arranged to foster communal harmony by depicting various festivals like Holi, Christmas and Ramadan. The entire park is decked beautifully in flowers and fruits of all colours, sizes and shapes.
The food festival, 'Aahara 2012' offers a delectable choice of South Indian, Oriental, Mangalorean, North Indian, Mexican and many other cuisines, along with sweets and chats.
Siri Horticultural Association vice-president Lakshmi Rao Aroor, joint secretary K Nemiraj Konde, district deputy director of horticulture Dr S Nanda and others were present. The exhibition will be open till April 1.
