Mar 5: Kodaikanal is one of the most beautiful and popular hill stations in South India, situated in Dindigul district in the state of Tamil Nadu. 'Kodaikanal,' meaning ‘the Gift of the Forest’ in its native language, is reffered to as the ‘Princess of Hill Stations’, with a long history going as far back as 1845 when it was formally established. The town of Kodaikanal sits on a plateau above the southern escarpment of the upper Palmi Hills, between the Parappar and Gundar Valleys. These hills form the eastward spur of the Western Ghats on the Western side of South India.
Daijiworld's ace photographer Dayanand Kukkaje recently had the opportunity to visit Kodaikanal, and captur its breathtaking beauty on his lens.
The meadows and grasslands cover the hillsides, and the lush forests are dense with gigantic trees of several varieties. Huge rocks dot the valleys and forests, with the dancing streams running along merrily. Enchanting waterfalls and gardens attract tourists round the year.
Kodaikanal is famous for eucalyptus oil, homemade chocolates, plums and pears. When temperatures dip in winter, woolen clothing in the Tibetan bazaar sells off like hot cakes, as it is available at cheaper rates.
The economy of Kodaikanal is predominantly dependent on tourism. The town's infrastructure changes every year in preparation for the peak tourist season. Major roads are converted into one-way lanes to regulate the increasing traffic and special police forces deplyed for the safety of the tourists and protection of local businesses. Hotels are often fully booked during the peak season, and remain virtually empty during the off-season.
Kodai Lake is one of the main attractions for the tourists in the city that is spread over 60 acres. Lacs of tourists walk around, sail on, ride on horses and cycles while admiring the lake. Kodaikanal is also the most popular honeymoon destination in South India because of its scenic beauty and quaint landscape.
Kodaikanal is influenced by Christian culture and the 150-year-old churches are worth a visit.
