Football Legend Sailen Manna Dead


Kolkata, Feb 27 (IANS): India's football legend Sailendra Nath Manna, popularly known as Sailen Manna, died at a private hospital here Monday. He was 87, family sources said.

He was admitted to the AMRI Hospital, Salt Lake, around 11 p.m. Sunday. The end came about two hours later at 1.55 a.m. Monday.

He died due to old age complications and leaves behind his wife and daughter.

Rated as one of the best defenders the country has ever produced, Manna was adjudged country's footballer of the millennium by the All India Football Federation in 2000.

He led India to the gold in the inaugural Asian Games in New Delhi and also captained the country in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and the 1954 Manila Asian Games.
