Karkala, Feb 22: There can be no better example of love and fidelity than this. A woman, even as she lay dying, had only one last wish - 'Don't harm my husband.'
This, despite the fact that she was allegedly killed by the husband who she was trying to protect.
The unfortunate incident occurred at Manjarapalke in Bola village in the taluk on Tuesday February 21. Shalini (35), was allegedly stabbed by her drunkard husband Sudhakar Poojary (36) and was admitted to a hospital in Mangalore, where she succumbed to her injuries in the afternoon.
Sudhakar Poojary, a resident of Kolajalu reportedly pestered Shalini for money on Tuesday morning, and stabbed her after she refused. He fled the scene immediately, but before running away, he threatened everyone at home of dire consequences.
The woman was brought to Mangalore with the knife in her abdomen, and the doctors at the hospital had to remove it. Shalini, who rolled bidis for running the family, is understood to have requested those around her not to harm her husband, even while fighting for her life at the hospital.
Shalini, daughter of the late Kuddu Poojary and Korapolu Poojary from Bola village, had married Sudhakar nine years back. She has left behind seven-year-old daughter, Sushma, and five-year-old Suraksha, besides her killer husband.
Sources said that Poojary, who worked for a provision store, is rude, and speaks rarely to people. He used to come home drunk in the evening, and threaten to kill the family members. It is said that he bought a new knife on Monday with the purpose of killing his wife, who was soft-spoken and good-natured.
The villagers are also fed up with Sudhakar, and they too are searching for him, it is learnt. A case was registered in rural police station here. Sub-inspector, Azmat Ali, has taken up investigation.
