Mangalore, Feb 5: The Muslim community celebrated Eid Milad on Sunday February 5 with great devotion and fervour. Muslims offered mass prayers and greeted each other on the occasion at Idgah, Light House Hill Road in the city and various other mosques in other parts of the district. People of all ages took part in the festival and prayed for peace and harmony.
Prayer meets and religious discourses too have been organized in mosques to celebrate the day.
This festival is celebrated to honour the birth and also the death of Prophet Mohammed. Coincidentally, the birth and death of Prophet Mohammed falls on the same day, and hence, instead of celebrating the day in a grand manner, people indulge themselves mostly in religious and social activities.
Earlier a grand procession was taken from Boobuka Masjid in the city via Golikatte Circle, Azizuddibn Road and Car street, to the Dargah at the Light House Hill here, in this connection.
Al Madrasa Tul Azaria president Yenepoya Mohammed Kunhi, vice-president, Haji SM Rashid, former mayor, K Ashraf, and secretary, Haneef Haji among others were present.
