Bhatkal: Trouble Erupts Near Honnavar After Boy Dies in Accident

Bhatkal, Feb 4: Trouble erupted near Honnavar on Friday February 3 evening following an accident in which an 8-year-old boy was killed on the spot.
Abdulla, son of Hasan, was a student of third standard at Marthoma School here. He was killed when a Bolero car hit him when he was crossing the road after getting down from the school bus. The driver fled the spot leaving the vehicle behind.
The accident occured at Valki, about 50 km away from Honnavar, at around 6 pm.
Angered by the incident, residents of Honnavar launched a protest demanding immediate arrest of the driver and damaged the Bolero. They also pelted stones and attacked the police who had arrived at the spot.
The police had to resort to lathi charge to disperse the crowd. Several police personnel and individuals were injured in the stone-pelting.
The traffic on Honnavar-Bangalore stretch was choked for around two hours following the incident.
Bhatkal DYSP M Narayan appealed to the mob to maintain calm. Some of the people who pelted stones and injured the policemen were arrested.
Karwar additional SP Balakrishna and JD (S) leader and TMC president Inayatulla Shabandari also visited the spot and urged for peace.
The situation was brought under control, but tight police vigil was deployed to prevent further unrest.
