Mangalore: Lucky Escape for Family as Fire Engulfs House

Mangalore, Feb 3: Joseph Martis, a resident of Pumpwell area here, and his family had a lucky escape on Friday February 3, when a major fire broke out in their house.

The incident took place at around 11 pm.

It is said that Joseph, an engineer by profession, had kept bath water for heating over firewood. The fire is said to have suddenly increased in intensity and spread, ripping through the roof.

However, the residents - Joseph, his wife and daughter - were unaware of the fire until students staying at a nearby PG noticed it and began shouting.

As soon as they saw the fire, all three rushed to safety. Almost half the house was ruined in the incident. The loss is yet to be ascertained.

Fire-fighters who rushed to the spot managed to douse the fire.

A case has been registered at Kadri police station.

    I totally agree with Jawar D'souza's views. Even a small flying cinder falling into the heap of dried material kept adjacent to the fire place is enough for the fire to spread at a rapid pace and destroy the tiled house fast!!

    A miraculous escape indeed, The students were Angles who saved the family. All the good work done by Joe , for so many years was rewarded by this chance to live and escape unhurt.
    The truth of the story is that he did not light the fire ,nor was the fire burning for heating water. The fire was lighted at around 1430 .
    It is unfair to say Joe was absentminded and for the report to carry an incorrect piece of information.

    In these types of old tilled houses, the wood used for the roofing get's dried up over the year's and are vulnerabe for such incident's. When you have a bath room which uses wood and other dry products for heating the water, it's alway's good to have it a little away from the house. Moreover when the wood burns it shoots some sparks at times which in case lands on the material stored for burning purpose, will ignite a fire, and we can assume how little time it might need for the fire to grow. Always some one should be near the fire to keep a watch on it. What ever has happened is happened there is no point in blaming anyone. It can happen to any one Engineer, Doctor man with a PHD or even a labour all are Human.

    Lucky to be alive. God only saved them as the fire was of high intensity as you can see from yhe pictures shot by our famous Dayanand Kukkeje. If the students had not noticed and shouted at the people living in the the house something worst could have happened.
