Republic Day Honour - Five Padma Awards for Karnataka

New Delhi, Jan 26: Karnataka has bagged one Padma Bhushan out of 27 for the nation as a whole, and four Padma Shri awards out of 77, for this year. The Padma awards, being announced on the occasion of Republic Day, were declared on Wednesday January 25.
Renowned cardiologist from Bangalore, Dr Deviprasad Shetty of Narayana Hrudayalaya, is the lone person from the state to get the rare honour of Padma Bhushan award. Theatre artiste, Nagaratnamma, wildlife conservationist and environmentalist, Dr Kota Ullas Karant, well known Yakshagana artiste, Chittani Ramachandra Subraya Hegde, and Dr Yajnaswamy Sundararajan for his contributions to the fields of science and engineering, have been picked for Padma Shri awards.
This time, a total of 109 achievers with outstanding contributions to various fields, have been picked for Padma awards. Out of them, 19 are women. Five among them have won Padma Vibhushan awards, 27 have won Padma Bhushan, while 77 others have been chosen for Padma Shri awards.
Famous sculptor from West Bengal, K G Subramanian, the late cartoonist from Goa, Mario Miranda, musical legend, the late Bhupen Hazarika, Dr Kantilal Hastimal Sancheti, and respected administer, T V Rajeshwar, have won Padma Visbhushan award, the second highest civilian award in the country. No one has been named for the prestigious Bharat Ratna award.
