Moodbidri: Woman Seeking Compensation Gets Refund of Bank Charges

Moodbidri, Jan 21: Chennamma (70) from Badaga Yedapadavu village near here, who had lost Rs 155 by way of collection and returning charges while trying to encash a cheque for Rs 1,500 issued to her by the tahsildar as compensation from natural calamities fund, got refund of the above charges.
The cheque in question was issued to her towards the damage suffered by her house due to wind and rain. She had sent the cheque drawn on State Bank of India Mangalore for collection through the local post office, and she was charged Rs 100 by the drawee bank as returning charges and Rs 55 by post office as collection charges, after the cheque in question bounced for want of funds.
It is learnt that the village accountant visited Chennamma’s home on Wednesday and made payment of Rs 200 to her towards refund of bank charges levied on her account. She also was requested to deposit the cheque again for collection, with the assurance that it will be passed this time. Chennamma had received the said cheque towards repairing her house, which she got done at an expenditure of around Rs 5,000.
The tahsildar, it is said, expressed regret for the above episode, which he attributed to the blunder committed by the case worker, when his attention was drawn to the above incident.
