Udupi: Tightened Cable Kills Fisherman at Sea

Udupi, Jan 17: A fisherman died on Monday January 16 afternoon after the cable of the fishing boat he was in got tightened around his body. The incident occurred off Malpe coast near here.

The deceased has been identified as Shekhar Naik (28), son of Manjappa Naik from Bhatkal. He had left for sea in a fishing boat named ‘Srinidhi’ from Malpe at around 3 am on Monday along with six other fishermen.

The boat was engaged in fishing activity about five km from Malpe shore, when Shekhar started pulling back the net at around 2.30 pm with the help of the cable of the inch brake drum of the boat. The cable accidentally got entangled in his leg. Within seconds, it got tightened around his body, and because of severe internal and external injuries caused, he died on the spot, it is learnt.

A report in this connection was registered in Malpe police station. Investigation has been undertaken.
