Udupi, Jan 16: The controversy surrounding the upcoming Paryaya at Sode Mutt is getting deeper each passing day in the run up to the event.
Puttige Mutt's Sri Sugunendra Swamiji, miffed over not being invited to the event, has already pledged to undertake a fast in protest from 9 am on Tuesday January 17, to 5 am the next day. Now, Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji has decided to counter the fast and said that he was hurt by the controversy and will not eat anything while Sri Sugunendra Swamiji is on fast.
Announcing the decision to fast, the Pejawar Swamiji said that he would begin his fast from Monday January 16 midnight and will go on till Wedneday January 18 noon.
He said that he was hurt by allegations by swamijis of other mutts that he had not intervened to solve the issue between Sri Vishwavallabhateertha of Sode Mutt and Sri Sugunendrateertha Swamiji of Puttige Mutt. He clarified that he had done his utmost to broker peace between the two, and had asked Sode Mutt to invite Sri Sugunendrateertha Swamiji. "However, the final decision is left to the Mutts," he said.
Earlier, Sri Sugunendra Swamiji had said that Pejawar Swamiji had not shown enough interest in the matter, and that is why he was hurt.
"I feel that Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji of Pejavar Mutt, senior-most Swamiji here, has not been showing the will power to ensure that the tradition of the Mutt is not given a go by. I understand that Pejavar Swamiji, Sri Samyamindra Acharya and Rajagopalacharya of Mantralaya, are in talks to tide over the problem. I have noticed that Pejavar Swamiji has not evinced total interest in the matter, nor has he held a firm and honest stand on the issue. If he makes up his mind, everything will fall in line. So, I have decided to undertake protest fast,” he had said.
