DK MP Capt Chowta urges for Konkan Railway merger among other demand for grants in parliament

Media Release

New Delhi, Mar 18: Dakshina Kannada (DK) MP Capt Brijesh Chowta raised the issue of the merger of Konkan Railway and reorganisation of Mangalore Railway administration among other railway related issues while speaking during the demand for grants for the ministry of railways, in Lok Sabha on Monday.

Addressing the parliament, Capt Brijesh Chowta acknowledged the remarkable achievements of Indian Railways, including 90% electrification, the introduction of high-speed Vande Bharat trains, and the redevelopment of over 1,300 stations.

He also applauded the extension of the Kabaka Puttur Express to Subramanya Junction, which will greatly benefit pilgrims and daily commuters. He expressed gratitude to the minister of railways for allocating Rs 7,559 crore to Karnataka in this budget.

He also acknowledged the significant progress in railway electrification, noting that 96.5% of Karnataka's railway network has now been electrified.

Highlighting the rapid expansion of railway infrastructure, Capt Chowta stated that since 2014, a total of 1,652 km of new railway tracks have been laid in Karnataka, surpassing the entire rail network of Sri Lanka.

While placing the demands from Dakshina Kannada, Capt Brijesh Chowta emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive reforms to enhance the region railway infrastructure. He advocated for the merger of the Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. (KRCL) with Indian Railways to alleviate its financial constraints and a debt burden of Rs 2,589 crore, which would stabilize its finances, unlock investments for modernization, and boost operational efficiency.

He also called for the reorganization of Mangaluru’s railway administration by shifting it from the Southern Railway’s jurisdiction in Palakkad, Kerala, to the South Western Railway headquartered in Mysuru, ensuring better coordination and infrastructure development.

Furthermore, he stressed the importance of merging the financially struggling Hassan-Mangaluru Rail Development Company (HMRDC) with Indian Railways or allowing a full takeover by the Karnataka government to enhance freight and passenger movement. Capt Chowta highlighted the necessity of establishing a Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) between New Mangalore Port and Bengaluru to reduce transportation costs and improve trade efficiency.

Capt Chowta urged the railway minister to expedite these crucial initiatives for enabling the realisation of Viksit Bharat 2047 through these development and policy changes and initiatives.

Respected MPCapt Chowta's demand good for Dakshina Kannada people. Also moving the Pallakad to Mysore. Currently in Mangalore Junction and Mangalore Central Railway station hardly any employee from Dakshin Kannada. They can't speak Kannada and Tulu. It will give employment to Mangalore people. Also we should get LHB coaches for Mangalore to Mumbai trains. After long time finally we got LHB coaches in Matsyagandha train. Finally we got the MP who think about Dakshina Kannada people. Also we urge MP to take up road issues, especially Flyover at Kadri Junction and fourway flyover at Chowki, Koolur, Surathkal to smooth movement of vehicles.

Konkan Railway is cash strapped and the purpose for what it was created has been served. It should be merged with Indian Railways and doubling of the track should be taken up and completed on priority. There is no much scope to improve the number of train services on the existing single track. Happy that MP has raised these questions and hopefully can follow up and get the things moving.

Why is he in a hurry to merge the Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. (KRCL) with Indian Railways? Is this like a BUY ONE GET ONE FREE promo? There seems to be a malafide intent and a hidden agenda behind it. Merger should be the final say when EVERYTHING from A to Z has been completed and nothing left for expediting. Give more priority/thrust/impetus to expansion of the Mangalore-Bombay-Mangalore lines ... which year-after-year is only promised ... not delivered. Simultaneously the number of trains plying between Mangalore-Bombay-Mangalore should be increased to manifold. Why is he not speaking about this? This is the URGENT need of the hour ... presently a pathetic too and fro single track can't bear the entire load ... as if that is not enough, you are deliberately delaying the existing operational trains in the siding yard for hours thereby allowing oncoming/departing trains such as premium Vande Bharat commenced utmost priority ... Instead of improving the current system, you are downgrading it. Why so much FAN FARE?

If you want development on this route merger of konkan railway with Indian railway is the first step towards that. You can't develop this with financiallly burden konkan railway corporation . With Mangalore being divided into three railway zones will only hinder the development. With merging konkan railway with Indian railway and shifting its headquarters to Mangalore will make massive development
