First of 160 Houses for Poor by Mangalore Diocese Handed Over

Mangalore, Jan 14: The first of the 160 houses, being built for the poor by the diocese of Mangalore to mark the post-centenary silver jubilee celebrations of the diocese, was handed over to a family here on Saturday January 14 at Maroli here.
Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza handed over the key of the house to John and Irene D'Souza, residents of Maroli. The house was given by Holy Cross Church, Cordel, Kulshekar. The bishop also unveiled the name plate on the house.
The Mangalore diocese will celebrate its 125th year on February 11 and 12. To mark the occasion, the diocese had undertaken the task of constructing 160 houses for the poor, and other such welfare works.
In his address, the bishop said that it was not the first time that the poor were being given better houses, and that various such projects had been undertaken by the diocese before. Citing an example, he said that in the year 2000 during Christmas, thatched roofs of houses were replaced with tiles.
"Now we are building 160 houses in the first phase. The work will continue in the future also," he added.
Post-centenary silver jubilee committee secretary Sushil Noronha, housing project coordinator and CODP director Fr Onil D'Souza, Holy Cross Church parish priest Fr Valerian Pinto, assistant priest John Moras, Guardian Angel Church, Angelore parish priest Fr Mathew Vas and Four Winds proprietor E Fernandes were present.
Holy Cross Church pastoral council vice-president Praveen Patrao welcomed while secretary George D'Souza proposed the vote of thanks.
