Panaji: Priest in Election Fray - Church Administration Uncomfortable

Daijiworld Media Network – Panaji (SP)

Panaji, Jan 12: The decision of Fr Bismark Dias (47), a priest from Goa, to contest the coming assembly poll scheduled for February this year, has created embarrassment for the heads of churches. Fr Dias has announced his decision to fight the election from Cumbarjuvem assembly constituency.

Jagrut Gaonkaracho Ekvot, a socio-political organization, has pledged its support to the priest. Fr Dias says he is aware that church rules forbid him from fighting elections, and that he is awaiting official communication in this regard from the church heads. A senior priest feels that churches will not be able to stop Bismark from fighting the coming poll.

Fr Dias, a graduate from St Xavier College in Mumbai, entered religious service in 1996. Major part of his service has been in Goa. Fr Dias, who took sides with the villagers and criticized the sale of an island, which was owned by the church, to a real estate firm, was asked not to deliver religious discourses or sermons to those attending the church.

Fr Dias however, feels that there is no difference between the service at the church and service to the public. “Mining and regional development projects are damaging the environment of Goa. There is a need to build a clean political culture in the state to stop the state from suffering irreparable environment damage,” he feels.

I am sure God and Mother Mary will also support and bless Fr. Bismarque if Fr. has now decided to help more people rather than just christians. Everyone is a child of God, so let Fr. move on and save not just people of Goa but also protect the paradise land of Goa which is already destroyed, raped and murdered. I being a christian am proud that Fr. is going out to help others , neighbours et all. My sincere support to Fr. Bismarque. I do not think God and Mama Mary told any Christian to help and serve only Christians so I do not see why Bishop should stop Fr. Bismarque. But it Fr. accumulates assets for his sake by entering politics then that would be the sad day. Hope that day does not come and Fr's genes do not get fall for this material and evil temptations.

    Best Wishes

Vox Populi is Vox Dei is an age old reminder to fellow mortals to uphold creation that is entrusted to the care of humble stewards privileged to serve the Community, Society, humanity and the planet.

The poor, displaced, homeless, exploited, marginalized, stigmatized, migrants, unemployed, socially disabled, handicapped, voiceless and such other categories of the Children of God are searching for meaning and relevance during this brief existence and pilgrimage called Life.

In our country we are still lucky to see young women and men respond to the Divine Call, bid touching and final farewells to their dear parents, sisters, brothers, family members, teachers and friends and take to the unending road of prayer, service and sacrifice through love and self-giving.

With a little suitcase and imbued with love for the noble vocation and mission, the candidate marches with zeal, hope and confidence to the noviciates, seminaries, formation houses and such holy institutions in multi-cultural India. Always promising themselves and their loved ones that they would toil to bring a ray of hope in the lives of fellow mortals through their acts of kindness and perseverance in those spiritual ways of proceeding.

Then commences a life of sacrifice, prayer, mortification, penance, abnegation, humility and poverty – all these lofty virtues in view of being worthy of divine service in the eyes of God and all his loving creation.

We need to keep on praying that the Giver of life may continue to activate the capacities and the hidden potential of his vast flock of the chosen ones who are heroically spending their lives in our religious communities, churches, chapels, shrines, temples, pagodas, monasteries, convents, seminaries and such other sacred places dotting the various regions of our vast country. As dignified citizens of our Motherland all could to do the little one can in this gigantic task of community-making, society-reshaping, nation-building and world-remaking.

This priest is not doing the right thing by trying to enter politics. When he became priest,he has committed to devout his priesthood life in the service of God. If he thinks that he has the good political knowledge where he can use it for the goodwill of his community then instead of participating himself in politics he can educate children to be the better politicians of tomorrow.Political activity is a very busy thing. If priest goes to Delhi who will look after his parish ? Priesthood is a very very precious thing and it cannot be messed up with politics.

I Personally feel this is not a good step by Friest Dias .For example Swami Agnivesh tried to enter Politics .He became even minister in Haryana Govt .But what he could do when he was in Arya Samaj he could not do even that much of service .You are getting Position ,Power and getting Paid for the Job of Politician. But if he wants to leave the Priesthood and then become fulltime politician then he may succeed .That is a different story

Fr.Dias. Like perivous incident what happend in Karnatka Mangalore all our catholic brothers, sisters priests & Bishop had to beg with BJP govt to release our brothers from jail and withdraw case against them. If there is a strong politician from Catholic community, violence against catholic may reduce for some extent.

Contesting the polls will enlarge the scope of Fr.Bismarck's ministry beyond the confines of church compound. He should not be discouraged to expand his role and he will be of use to the society at large along with his priestly ministry. We have the previous example of a priest from Kalagatagi constituency in Karnataka winning the MLA seat and was both a priest and a MLA. Also,we cannot forget Archbishop Macarios of Cyprus who was a President of that country and there are many other similar cases. Please do not restrict Fr.Bismarck from doing good to the society at large since he criticised the church from selling an island.

For sure it is a good move. We catholics just pray and leave rest to God. Our priest are so well educated and a genius leaders who are mastered in Education, health who can be a great corrupt free leaders of this world. Progression is a key in catholics and one has to change the way of thinking for priest to be a great social as well religious leaders of this earth. Bottom line here is priest is tired of watching the corruption and politicians are taken the poor for granted and he likes to offer best services to the public with clean leadership. that is what neeeded at this hour for India to be a super power nation of this earth,. God bless fr.

I totally object/disagree Rev. Fr. Bismark Dias to enter into politics & contest for elections. A priest is entirely called and dedicated his entire service for the work of the church of Christ Jesus. He is a spiritual leader and he should take care of the church. If he wanted to be in politics and to constest elections let him do so but should resign/come out from the Priest Hood.

As I see it Fr Bismark is on his way out of the Catholic Church and his faithFr,is it worth it? After all the love of Christ you have known? This is a trip of vain glory. Goa going gone.Bismark blowing blowing away...into the unknown dispair.

Why does the decision of Fr Bismark Dias (47), a priest from Goa, to contest the coming assembly poll create an embarrassment for the heads of churches?

Though Fr Dias is aware that church rules forbid him from fighting election, he is determined to contest.

I am very pleased to hear about a strong Catholic priest, who took sides with the villagers and criticized the sale of an island, which was owned by the church, to a real firm.

In my opinion he takes the Gospel seriously because he looks after the poor, the helpless, the downtrodden, human beings uneducated and not able to fight for their legal rights.

He even was asked not to deliver religious discourses or sermons to those attending the church.

I think he met the decision to contest the coming assembly poll after a long consideration.

I am sure he follows his conscience and he knows about the consequences he will face but as a strong believer he wants to defend and to help the poor.

In every poor human being he sees Jesus and there is nothing wrong to be with the villagers.

The message of the Gospel is dignity, joy and happiness, respect and tolerance and we shall see the poor and the needy and we shall do what we can to help them that they can live in dignity and without poverty.

The message of the Gospel is radical and Fr. Dias wants to build up a clean political culture and to give the poor dignity.

Therefore contesting polls is not wrong and should be accepted.

    Best regards

Religion & politics are two different aspects. The church has reduced us to this stage saying every time that politics is dirty. We Christians are responsible in making the politics dirty because the church & our elected Christian reps never played a clean role. Fr Dias is an Indian citizen and full right to contest the election. He is educated man and free to take his own decision. Church heirachy may be uncomfortable and the reasons are best known to all of us.

It is high time our Catholic Church opens a political wing. As our priests are trained in different fields like music, education, arts etc. our talented priests should be trained for political arena too without compromising their other vows and oaths to priesthood including celibacy. If babas and annas can do, we can do it too, but without any corruption and bias please.

The background of his political aspiration is the attempt by Church authorities to sell an island owned by it for real Estate against the wish of people living there.

Even at the cost of losing a noble priest, the community will have an educated leader who has the guts to call a spade a spade. Much bold than the sacrifice of Sr. Valsa.

I have my full support to Fr. Dias

Church rules prohibit priests entering politics. That is church rule and regulation. It is simple. Quit as a priest and be a politician. With priestly attitude and compassion, you can serve people better in politics. End of the day corrupt Goa politics need person like you if you are honest by what you proclaim.
