Mangalore: ‘Iftar’ Remark – Muslim Committee Invites Swamiji for Dialogue

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jan 11: Mangalore Muslim Central Committee has invited Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji of Pejavar Mutt for a dialogue, with the intention of giving him more information on the Islamic tenet of not differentiating between rich and poor, superior and inferior, and people of different castes or religions. “We believe that Iftar, which involves eating together from a single utensil reinforces the principle of equality. We are prepared for a discussion on this aspect,” it said.

President of the committee, K S Mohammed Masood, said that Subrahmanya Made Made Snana controversy has nothing do with the Muslim community and that therefore, the community has not taken any interest in it. He objected to the Swamiji’s initiative of unnecessarily dragging the issue of Islamic practices while defending the above practice.

“At a programme of interaction held at Bangalore and attended by heads of several mutts, Pejavar Swamiji questioned as to whether the food consumed during Iftar parties is considered left over or not, because of the fact that it is eaten together by a number of people. None of the Muslims eat leftover food of another person, nor do they ask others to consume it. It is tragic that a practice that is based on the principle of equality among human beings is being picked to show as an example of eating leftovers,” he lamented.

He said that his community has lot of respect for the Swamiji, and felt that he has the ability guide the society. “We feel sorry for such a remark that is made without studying about harmonious coexistence. We pray God to give him good sense. We invite him to have a discussion on Iftar with an aim to enlighten him more on the principles behind the practice,” Masood added.

Respected Swamiji should accept the invitation of muslims and call them to udupi mutt and teach them the essence of hinduism, non violence, religious tolerence, compassion towards animals and other civic practices which would be good for the health of everyone.

    Brother Harold D'cunha,

Islam in not based on traditional or modern ways. Whatever our PROPHET MUHAMMED (May Peace Be upon Him) has done, we have to follow to be a very true Muslim.Eating together from a single plate is the way taught by our PROPHET MUHAMMED (May Peace Be upon Him).
ALLAAH is pleased the most when ALLAAH sees a Muslim on a dining-mat sitting with his wife and children to eat. When they sit together to eat, ALLAAH looks at them with mercy and forgives them before they separate.
You may know the benefits (Insha ALLAAH).This is let you clear from the misconception brother. take care.

At the iftars, I have had food, nobody puts back the stuff they have eaten. it is just that all people share the food served, kept on a serving dish. Sharing food bonds people and it is hygienic as well depending on the prevailing habits of those who are sharing food.

The practice of leaving some food in the plate for his wife is prevelent in GSB community also since ages.We don't consider it as inhuman. It is a internal family matter.Newly wedded couple share the same laddu during the first lunch after marriage.
There may be so many customs prevelent in every religion should be respected.
Now as far as made snana is concerned, banning it,demand/statement always come from non hindus, hindu baiters. You please see various comments on the subject in this web on various occasions.Adverse commentators(non hindu) on hindu matters are nothing but "adhika Prasangis"Such comments does make oneself as "Progressive"

I appreciate the fair move by Mr Masood. I have not checked the fact whether swamiji made such comment or not. But if he has made such a remark it is very unfortunate and totally wrong. About Lydia Lobo comment on eating by the leftover of spouse is unwanted at this time. There are lot of other issues we can focus on rather making derogatory remarks to any religion or caste.

All the religions in the world have best scriptures, traditions and practices. Our vedas, Upanishads and Bhagavadgeethas are thousands of years old. The Quoran and The Bible are also hundreds and thousands year old. All these scriptures may preach to be good to others, be tolerate, be just etc., In spite of having these good books and preachers which religion and their people or free from violence and intolerance among their own people or other religion people? It is the arrogant belief that ones own faith is the best than any one else is the cause of all hatredness. All the religions in the world fight among themselves or with others. This means that nobody has understood their religion properly and believe only their own religion is superior, only their customs, traditions and practices are best for others it is the blind belief. This could be the evolution process oh humankind. Now is the time to think scientifically keep all the religion to the background and think of humankind as a whole.

    Dear Mr. dcunha,
Think before u speak(write),who said iftar is unhygienic, this practice was followed by our dear prophet(pbuh)to say that each one of gods creation is equal irrespective of caste creed or wealth, u should know that before iftaar we perform ablution, so there is no question of hygienic, islam is strict about cleanliness. In gulf countries still eating in one plate is very much followed.

I am sorry to say, but this sarcastic comment by the Swamiji is totally outrageous and unacceptable. It simply reflects badly on his knowledge and culture.

Forgive Him-for he know not what he is speaking!
He hasn't seen how the people eat from same plate without their fingers touching their mouth, & no saliva dripping onto the plate they share, unlike how those people devour the food on banana leaf- leaving their saliva onto the leaf in "Boori-bojans" of the opposite.
Ignorance or Arrogance only makes someone give statements justifying their wrongs quoting some others rituals, without participating(seeing face to face) in them.

This practice of eating from the same plate whether during If tar or other times too, I have seen it personally with some Pak, Indian too in Pak/Indians restaurant in the Gulf.
It looks very disgusting, dirty at the look itself.

Better way to keep a spoon in the main plate and every individual will be given a plate and take from the main plate with the help of the spoon. This is more hygienic too.

Every comments should be taken positively and changes for betterment should be considered. Not to follow the old age system which may not be good from health point of view.

Today Arabs in the middle east have changed their life style of eating in the same plate and they follow hygienic way, not eating form the same plate.

The Swamiji must consult his counterparts in West Bengal where a husband leaves some food in his plate which must be eaten by his wife.

I am not belittling the custom nor criticizing it. Customs and traditions are made by people. Swami should have thought before comparing Made Snaana to Iftar eating style because the call to stop the tradition was not made by Muslims.

Very fair Mr. Mohammed Masood. Let the Swamiji be present for a dialogue and have some basic knowledge how Iftaar is conducted. Infact, though I am a non-Muslim, I have a quite large number of Muslim friends and have participated in Iftaar. Eating together in one large plate certainly invokes oneness and equality. It is totally different than rolling on left overs of others. May God give Swami good sense.
