Mangaluru, Feb 9: In a grand ceremony held at Palemar Garden on Sunday, February 9, Corporator Ganesh Kulal was awarded the coveted Mangaluru Press Club Award for his outstanding contributions to society.
The 2024 award, presented during the Press Club’s annual celebration, recognised Kulal's tireless efforts in community service, especially his work in performing over 1,500 last rites.

Former minister Krishna J Palemaar, while presenting the award, emphasised, "Recognising and honouring those who selflessly serve society is our responsibility." He hailed Kulal as an exceptional role model whose service should be emulated.
“Individuals like Ganesh Kulal are rare. His contributions, like those of Harikala Hajabba, deserve national recognition,” Palemaar said.
The event also featured an inauguration by former Mayor Divakar Kadri, who called on journalists to remain fearless in exposing the truth to the public. “Journalists have made invaluable contributions to the progress of society,” he remarked.
The Press Club’s president, P B Harish Rai, chaired the event, while founder president K Anand Shetty presented Pratibha Puraskar to children of journalists, further celebrating the event’s spirit of excellence.
Among the distinguished attendees were Mayor Manoj Kumar Kodikal, Deputy Mayor Bhanumathi, and a host of prominent figures, including former mayors Sudheer Shetty and Premanand Shetty. Other notable personalities from the media and journalistic organisations, such as Jagannath Shetty, Ravindra Shetty, Srinivas Indaje and Ramakrishna A R, also graced the event.
In addition to Kulal’s award, veteran journalists Muhammad Arif Padubidri, Bhaskar Rai Katta, Jitendra Kundeshwar, Satish Ira, and Raghuram Nayak received the Press Club Honorary Award.
Media Academy Award recipients included U K Kumaranath, Annu Mangaluru, Ibrahim Adkathala, Vijay Kotyan, and Sandhya Hegde. District State award recipients I B Sandeep Kumar, Sukhpal Polali, and Pushparaj B N were also honoured.
Lokesh Rai and Nikhil compered the programme.
The event also recognised the achievements of 19 talented students, showcasing the next generation’s promise in the world of media.
