Udupi: Swimmer Gopal Kharvi Takes a Shot at Guinness World Record

Udupi, Jan 8: Ace swimmer Gopal Kharvi embarked on an attempt etch his name in Guinness Book of World Records by swimming handcuffed from St Mary’s Island to Malpe beach here on Sunday January 8 morning.
A native of Kundapur, Kharvi covered a distance of nine kilometers. He also had his legs bound with a metal chain.
Guinness representative Siddaraju from Bangalore and Udupi circle inspector Girish handcuffed Gopal Kharvi at St Mary’s Island at 7.40 am. He reached Malpe beach at 10.25 am, covering the distance in 2.45 hours.
Addressing media persons, Siddaraju said that the details of Gopal Kharvi’s swim will be passed on to authorities at Guinness World Records, which will announce the decision in three months.
DySP Jayant Shetty, Gopal Kharvi’s wife Sujata, state former minister Jayaprakash Hegde, entrepreneur Pramod Madhwaraj, Yashpal Suvarna, Kodikanyana gram panchayat president Gulabi, Gangolli Guru Jyoti Club president Sadanand Shenoy, Manjunat from Bangalore and others were present.
Guru Jyoti Club presented a cash award of Rs 10,000 and Yashpal Suvarna presented a cash award of Rs 5,000 to Gopal Kharvi.
