Mangalore, Jan 6: In a serial accident involving a bus, a Scorpio and Maruti Omni vehicles near Mukka check post near Suratkal on Thursday January 5 evening, five persons sustained serious injuries, while another escaped with minor injuries. Five of the injured belong to the same family. They were returning to their home after attending a house warming ceremony. All the injured are being treated in a private hospital here.
Five persons who were travelling in Scorpio vehicle were injured, while a bus passenger also suffered injuries. Stevan D’Souza (45), who was driving the Scorpio, suffered injuries of serious nature. His sister, Dora Sequeira (42), Tina D’Souza (34), daughter-in-law of Stevan’s brother, her son, Gavin D’Souza (11) and daughter, Trisha (6), were injured. They were returning their home in Chelyaru near Suratkal after attending a house warming ceremony in Udyavar. They were provided preliminary treatment at Mukka hospital before being shifted to KMC Hospital here. Bus passenger, Suresh Kumar (48), who sustained minor injuries, was discharged after providing first aid.
The accident occurred, after a private express bus moving towards Udupi from Mangalore hit a bus coming from opposite direction and Scorpio vehicle, while trying to overtake another vehicle. Due to the impact of the accident, the Scorpio twirled around before hitting a Maruti Omni coming from behind. People in the Omni, who had hired the vehicle to attend a marriage function in Kanhangad, escaped unhurt. The policemen helped them in getting another vehicle to move ahead. While the front portion of the bus suffered some damages, the Scorpio bore the brunt of the hit and was thoroughly damaged.
A case stands registered in Suratkal station. Investigation has been taken up.
