Washington, Jan 6: In a strong statement on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei condemned the latest airstrikes carried out by the US-led coalition on Yemen’s northern province of Saada. Baghaei called the repeated military interventions by the US, Britain, and Israel a clear violation of Yemen's sovereignty, stating they "contradict international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter." He also warned that such actions would only exacerbate instability and insecurity in the West Asia region.
The airstrikes, targeting a military site of the Houthi group in Saada, were launched early on Sunday. While the US military has yet to comment, residents and Houthi-controlled media sources confirmed the attack, adding to the ongoing military tensions in Yemen. Since November 2023, the Houthis have increased their attacks against Israeli interests, including missile and drone strikes in the Red Sea, as part of their support for Palestinians. In retaliation, the US-led naval coalition has escalated airstrikes on Houthi positions.
In a separate incident, Baghaei expressed Iran’s condolences to Pakistan following a deadly explosion in southwestern Balochistan province. At least four people were killed, and 32 others injured in the attack, which occurred when a convoy was struck in Turbat district. While the Balochistan Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the bombing, Pakistani authorities have not officially verified the details.
Baghaei stressed the urgent need for global cooperation to prevent and combat terrorism, reinforcing Iran’s stance against violent extremism.
