Mangaluru Dec 24: The Infant Jesus Shrine in Bikarnakatte, in association with Bharath Auto Car Private Limited, organised a unique ‘Christmas Star’ competition focused on the theme "Wealth out of Waste". The initiative encouraged individuals, particularly students and community members, to create decorative Christmas stars using waste materials.
Fr Stephen Pereira, director of the Infant Jesus Shrine, shared that the competition has received positive responses over the years.
“Every year, we organise a Christmas star competition, and we have consistently received positive responses. This year, the event holds additional significance, as participants have come not only from the city but also from places like Honnavar, Bela, Miyapadav, Nelyadi, and Nayanadu,” he said.
The stars on display were created from a variety of materials such as matchsticks, waste paper, kuswar, thread, coconut flowers, wood, powdered eggshells, grains, bamboo, and arecanuts. “There are a variety of stars on display,” Fr Pereira added, emphasising the creativity involved.
Fr Pereira also highlighted the symbolic meaning of the Christmas star, stating, “Star is the special attraction of Christmas time; there are many other decorations, but among them, the star stands out. Jesus was born with the help of stars, and Jesus himself said in the gospel that you are the light, and the star is that which dispels the darkness and gives us real light. So, this star helps us not only to celebrate but also as an invitation to walk from darkness to light.”
The results of the competition will be announced during the evening Mass on December 24. Prizes will be awarded during the annual feast of the Infant Jesus Shrine on January 14.
