Mangaluru, Dec 23: The commissioner of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) issued a clarification to the media regarding reports in the press about alleged damage to water resources caused by unprocessed drainage water flowing into open drains from the Manjalpaade wet wells.

The press release stated, “There is a wastewater processing unit at Pacchanady with a capacity of 8.75 MLD. This includes the wet wells at Manjalpaade and Kongur Math. As per the system, wastewater from Kongur Math is pumped to the Manjalpaade wet well and subsequently transferred to the Pacchanady processing unit. The processed water at the Pacchanady unit is released into the Phalguni River, which flows below the Maravoor dam.

“Three pumps with a capacity of 60 HP each are installed at the Manjalpaade wet well. As these pumps are old, leakage issues have been observed. One pump has already been sent for repairs, and the remaining two will also be repaired. However, the leaked water from these pumps is directed into the inlet tank within the wet well premises, preventing any flow into the adjacent roadside drain.

“With the increased population in the areas of Manjalpaade and Kongur Math, action is being taken to replace the old pumps with three new pumps of 100 HP capacity each.

“We wish to assure the public that wastewater or processed water from the Manjalpaade and Kongur Math wet wells, as well as from the Pacchanady processing unit, is not being discharged into roadside drains.”
