Udupi, Dec 24: The new moon day of Margashira month is observed as ‘Yellamavasya’ in Karnataka. This day is considered sacred by Hindus, as taking dip in the sea on this day and paying tributes to the ancestors in the early morning is thought to be beneficial.
Thousands of people flocked the seashore at Malpe early morning on Saturday December 24 on account of Yellamavasya, and took holy dip in the sea. Then they went to the neighbouring Lord Vodabhandeshwara Temple and offered obeisance to the presiding deity.
A number of people also chose to take part in rituals associated with paying tributes to their deceased parents and forefathers at the seashore, with the assistance of priests, who were present there.
The policemen patrolled the area to maintain law and order, and also to ensure that no untoward incidents occurre while the people took a dip in large numbers together.
