Mangalore: Eight Including Baby Trapped in Apartment Lift for Four Hours

Mangalore, Dec 23: Eight people inlcuding a baby had a harrowing time at Falnir Towers here on Friday December 23 when they got trapped in the building's lift for about four hours.

Mahmood (42), Renugopal Puthran (57), Ibrahim (26), Ayub (44), Nazir (30), Simsina (25), Zubaida (46) and 10-month-old baby girl Seeza were stuck in the lift.

The building is an old one and it is said that the lift had no notice regarding the maximum number of people and total weight it could accomodate. The lift was stuck on the first floor.

The incident took place at around 6 pm, and it was around 10 pm by the time they were finally rescued. Though there were two security guards who heard them shouting for help, they could do little.

At around 7.30 pm Pandeshwar fire squad with five personnel arrived at the spot, but they too could not do much.

Finally, the lift technicians were called, and they managed to break open the lift lock according to instructions in the lift manual.

Luckily, despite being trapped for four hours inside the closed lift, all the eight were fine.

Incidentally, all of them had come to check a flat on the sixth floor which they were planning to take on rent. When the incident took place, the broker who had brought them there fled the place fearing retaliation.

It is said that this is not the first time that such an incident had taken place in this building, and about two years ago the lift had got stuck in a similar way.

No case has been registered yet.

    Mahesh,if your thumb is paining, would you cut the thumb instead of going to a doctor.have sense while commenting.There was a baby and mother, do you expect them to walk down/up!

    Thank God all the eight including the baby are safe. Luckily the lift came down from the top floor and killed or injured the people in the lift. Last week in New York a female was crushed to death as the lift moved up before the lift door closed. The whole building with offices were closed till the investigation was done.

    Maintenance ,regular check & drill(fire or similar trap incident) must be carried out to ensure everything is okay in case of emergency or working as it is intened. We or the persons who is responsible ( authorities or maintenance company) never bothered nor aware of these things. These people just take money & go away without a ctually doing the work -WHO IS RESPONSIBLE IF SOMETHING SIMILAR INCIDENT TURN TO DEADLY A CCIDENT?

    Maintenance of the building is very much essential.Look at the status of this building, absolutely no maintenance at all.In big cities huge amount is charged from the tenants for maintaining the building.But here in Mangalore very little or no fees at all.These days flats are very expensive each square feet costs minimum Rs 3500 and above,so it is the duty of every tenant to look after their property with great interest.Every building should form a committee to charge the tenant monthly and the earned income then can be utilized to avid such incidents.

    Use staircase unless you are too old and weak.It is a good excercise.Lift is a machine which can fail anytime.Also in every lift there should be caution to people about the availability of generator backup or not.There should be clear instruction what to do in case of emergency.

    It is better to get stuck than collapse..!!!Thank God...what can you expect from a old building and old lift..? Five star facilities...? Even in five star facilities sometimes lift's fail...!!
