Mangalore: Protest Erupts After Policeman Thrashes Bus Driver for Blocking Path

Mangalore, Dec 15: Tension prevailed at Pumpwell area here on Thursday December 15 after a policeman thrashed a bus driver when the latter unintentionally blocked the police vehicle that was chasing robbers.

It may be recalled that on Thursday, a gang of robbers fled with Rs 32 lac cash from a car in Milagres. The cash was to be deposited in an ATM.

The police began a chase for the robbers, but were hindered at Pumpwell when a Suvarna bus blocked their path. A policeman, angered at this and anxious about losing precious time, got out of the vehicle and began to kick the driver Madhu of Suvarna bus.

Eyewitnesses told Daijiworld that the policeman kicked the driver so hard that he was badly hurt on the chest, and that even the gold chain he was wearing cut off. One of the three police vehicles that were involved in the chase took the bus driver to the police station, from where he will be admitted to Wenlock Hospital for treatment.

The incident snowballed into a controversy, and bus drivers began a protest at the spot. City buses have come to a halt, and police had to resort to mild lathi charge to control the protesters.

The surrounding areas of Kankanady, Padil, and even Thokkuttu were blocked due to the bus strike.

All senior police officials including commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, ACP Gadadi, Gaonkar and others are at the spot.

    These drivers indeed deserve such type of treatment. Pvt. city buses of Mangluru are a big nuisance and dangerous due to the reckless driving and bypassing traffic rules. Drivers are very abusive and abuse and assault passengers who dares argue with them. It is high time that the Govt. start buses on different routes on a pilot scheme and then slowly phase out these pvt. buses!! Mangalore now needs a mass rapid transport system!!

    Private buses are dangerous in Mangalore. Always the the drivers are drunk and drug addicts. The police have done a wonderful job. Mangalore really need decent government city buses with adequate management syestem likewise in Bangalore.

    City bus drivers in Mangalore / Dakshina Kannada are very aggressive and known for their rash driving habits. Don’t understand what makes them always drive in hurry? Is that the pressure from bus conductors or competition from other buses!?

    Quite often they do not stop the bus completely when a passenger has to get down from the bus especially in case of male passenger. They move the bus immediately once a passenger puts his first feet on the door step and other still on the ground. No sympathy for old aged people too.

    RTO / police should take strict action against rash and speeding bus drivers, should cancel permits and driving licenses before they kill innocent people.

    First of all the system has become useless. First the police become slaves of the state government. Secondly the police use unlawful force when they could not perform duties and catch the robbers. The police should have modern technique to catch the robbers. The police can call the next police check post on duty to come on the road and block that particular vehicle they are using.Why run behind the robbers and disrupt the entire traffic and public movements.

    Very good action from police. City bus should be made follow the traffic rules. Police should regulate these city bus drivers day in and day out.
    There should be some mandatory course for these drivers yearly.

    Policemen should reqiured a training session to deal with public without bias. Karnataka police is very unprofessional dealing with public has no decency in approching with public. Very sad to see them acting like terrors. Give respect take respect approach with with human and whcih is a key point police has to understand. They are not the bosses of public rather security providers and has to be understood by them. At this moment they police thinks they are the fathers of public which the mind set has to be changed and use friendly approach towards public for betterment the society. Look at North American police who are so professional while dealing with public one has to admire their profession and have a great respect for them for securing the society without bias colour, religion, gender etc.

    THESE DRIVERS OF THE BUSES, WHO ARE CARELESS AND SOMETIMES KILL PEOPLE BY OVER SPEEDING NEVER HOLD A RALLY OR PROTEST AFTER A TRAGIC DEATH OF SOME PASSERBY. I HAVE NEVER SEEN THEM EVEN LAMENTING AT THE LOSS OF LIFE BY THIER SPEEDING. NOW WHEN THERE WAS A NEED TO CATCH THE CULPRITS, THEY PROTEST BECAUSE THEY LOST SOME CUSTOMERS.     Mr.Ismail from Yanbu,Saudi, should live in Mangalore and drive a smaller vehicle,or ride a Bike on Mangalore roads day and night. Then He should comment on the action of the Police. Constable should have given few more beatings to that driver to teach a lesson on driving. If I come to know who this Constable, I will reward him for His actions.     Drivers need to be educated. If the siren is running, on police vehicle or ambulance, other vehicles must cooperate and give way to those vehicles. This is a crime in other countries.

    Bus drivers are a menace and even if unintentional its ok. These people recklessly play with the life of other commuters. No point blocking roads when you bus drivers yourselves do not have a clean conscience. Get back to work people, do not create further menace of blocking roads

    People,

    Noody should block emergency vehicles ie Police, Fire, Ambulance,,, thats why they have red light on top of them and sirens too....no exceptions here...if anybody blocks the road using force is correct decision... thats what Police are taught everywhere in the world...Mangalore is no exception to this......

    Normally I dont support Police,,, this is an exception......

    Delighted to see Gadadi and Goankar working together as brother....only missing link here is poor Muneer....

    Nobody has the right to block the traffic. Its a duty of a Motorist to get a side n give a way whenever they heard the siren of police car or amubulance. But in Manglore its oppsite just block the traffic and protest. ITs uttlery shame on our part.

    I wonder whether the Police vehicle were chasing the robbers with Siren ON? If the siren is on, then, every vehicle need to give way and try to move to the side irrespective of the situation. This is done both for ambulance, fire brigade and police vehicles. If Siren was not on, then, I dont see any mistake by the bus dirver, unless he was taking the whole road rather than driving on his side of the road. It is a beauty to watch such scenarios in the Western World and North America where every vehicle comes to a standstill when siren is on - every citizen of those country knows fully well their responsibility in such hour of need. Sadly such decipline is totally missing among us.

    Decipline plays a major role which is sadly missed in Mangalore and in fact, all over India!

    As a civilized citizen it is important to give way to police vehicles, Ambulances, and fire brigades when they use their siren.Blocking their way will jeopardize the entire situation. Our cooperation and support will definitely help them to ute their duties more effectively and efficiently, which in turn might help us a lot.

    pleas read the news properly and then comment. Driver is not breaking the traffic rule. That too it was unintentional. AS if he know that police are chasing robbers. Incase if police had put a syran he would have come to knw the urgency. Police has done a mistake by kicking the bus driver. He too a human bieng. Could have solved the problem in someother way. Now he has been hospitalised. How will look after his family?

    IF THE TRAFFICE MENANCE IS TOTALLY CONTROLLED BY POLICE WE SALUTE THE
    DEPT. 1000 TIMES BECAUSE EVERYDAY MORNING STARTS WITH NUISANCE BY THE BUS ONE WAY OR THE OTHER AND IF THIS IS SOLVED 50% OF THE TRAFFICE PROBLEM WILL BE SOLVED.

    The bus drivers think that the entire road is for them alone. they don't care for other vehicles which are coming from behind.they stop as they like at the middle of the road. Even if there is enough place at the sides these want to stop at the middle of the road so that no vehicles overtake them. No traffic rules in mangalore. Police people realise now when they had urgency?? what about us when we travel to go to office??? there must be proper monitoring system so that the buses stop only at the sides without disturbing vehicles behind.........

    In Mangalore the bus drivers are a huge nuisance. They think no body can control them and they do not bother about the traffic and they break all the possible rules of traffic to reach faster and pick up more passengers in turn they drive very unruly and are a huge nuisance
