Mangalore: Protest Erupts After Policeman Thrashes Bus Driver for Blocking Path

Mangalore, Dec 15: Tension prevailed at Pumpwell area here on Thursday December 15 after a policeman thrashed a bus driver when the latter unintentionally blocked the police vehicle that was chasing robbers.
It may be recalled that on Thursday, a gang of robbers fled with Rs 32 lac cash from a car in Milagres. The cash was to be deposited in an ATM.
The police began a chase for the robbers, but were hindered at Pumpwell when a Suvarna bus blocked their path. A policeman, angered at this and anxious about losing precious time, got out of the vehicle and began to kick the driver Madhu of Suvarna bus.
Eyewitnesses told Daijiworld that the policeman kicked the driver so hard that he was badly hurt on the chest, and that even the gold chain he was wearing cut off. One of the three police vehicles that were involved in the chase took the bus driver to the police station, from where he will be admitted to Wenlock Hospital for treatment.
The incident snowballed into a controversy, and bus drivers began a protest at the spot. City buses have come to a halt, and police had to resort to mild lathi charge to control the protesters.
The surrounding areas of Kankanady, Padil, and even Thokkuttu were blocked due to the bus strike.
All senior police officials including commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, ACP Gadadi, Gaonkar and others are at the spot.
