Moodbidri, Dec 15: In a horrific incident that came to light on Wednesday December 14, a person running a Pan Beeda shop was found to have been killed by unknown people, before hanging his body. The incident occurred at Kariyanangadi in Beluvai near here.
Hariyappa Poojary (45), son of the late Lokaiah Poojary from Kariangangadi was the unfortunate victim. The locals say financial disputes were behind this dastardly act.
Poojary, who operated a small petty shop in Beluvai, did not turn up at home for lunch on Tuesday. When his niece, Shakuntala, called him up, he told her that he was in Kaikamba. When she again contacted him over phone in the evening, he told her in a weary tone that he was suffering from head ache, and that he would be back home soon. He did not return even at night, and when called, his mobile phone was found to have been switched off.
The body of Poojary was found hanging in an old family house, which is not inhabited by anyone of late, on Wednesday. Lakshman Poojary, elder brother of Hariyappa, visits this building every morning and evening for lighting lamp at the room reserved for demigods. When he went to this house on Wednesday morning, he found the body of his brother hanging from the roof beam.
Hariyappa’ wife, Geeta, was on a visit to her parental home in Kukkundoor to attend a marriage there, along with her daughter, Deeksha, it is gathered.
People say that Hariyappa Poojary had lent two lac rupees to a person from Kaikmabla, and that he was after that person to recover the loan since some time, although no one knows about the identity of the borrower. The locals said that Hariyappa would have been killed on Tuesday night, and hung here to project it to be a case of suicide. The footwear and spectacles of Hariyappa were not found at the spot. Even though the mobile phone was there, its sim card had been found to be removed. Only coins were found in the shirt pocket. An injury mark created by hitting his head with some hard object along blood which had oozed out, were found on the body, it is learnt.
Local police inspector, A K Timmaiah, and sub-inspector, Ramesh Kumar, visited the spot and registered a case. Investigation has been taken up.
