Sullia, Dec 15: After misunderstanding arose between groups of students relating to accommodation on a bus plying between the town and Guttigar, they fought a pitched battle. Six students were hospitalized on Tuesday December 13 in this connection.
Verbal altercations between the students on the bus over seat sharing gave rise to a brawl when the bus stopped at Elimale bus stop. In a complaint, Prashant, student of a local college, accused Harris, Abdul Rashid, and Abdul Sattar of assaulting him and his friends, Bookshit and Tejakumar. A counter complaint was also filed by another group.
After coming to know of the incident, hundreds of college students gathered at the hospital on Wednesday December 14. There too, tempers flew high, and verbal duel ensued between different groups. The policemen dispersed the students by using their canes.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Social Democratic Party of India taluk president, Abdul Kalam, said that the assault on some students at Elimale was pre-planned. He accused a group of students of coming to the spot in another vehicle and beating up students travelling in the bus. He accused the local village accountant of inciting the students to torch a house in Nellur Kemraje in which a student had taken shelter. He demanded his immediate suspension of the official, and warned of holding protest if this demand is not met.
Party’s town unit president, Sattar Sangam, Mustafa M K, Ummer K, Mustafa Paichar, and others were present at the press conference.
