Udupi, Dec 12: District superintendent of police, Y S Ravikumar, revealed that the investigation into the suicide of upcoming athlete of national stature, Prathvi, a second year PU student of SMS College Brahmavar, has been completed. “Report about the findings has been handed over to Kundapur sub-divisional officer. Charge sheet will be filed soon against Misban from Brahmavar, who is the main accused in the case,” he informed.
Speaking to reporters in his office on Sunday December 11, Kumar said that the detailed investigation by policemen has pinpointed to the role of Misban in the suicide of the athlete. “He will be charged with inflicting mental harassment on Prathvi and abetting her suicide,” he said.
The unexpected suicide of the promising athlete in her hostel on September 27 this year had given rise to a sense of anger and disbelief. Prathvi, who had just returned with a medal in the state level sports meet in Mandya, was found to be in a happy mood. Her sudden suicide at 12 pm that day in the hostel room had come as a shock to the entire region. After initial investigations did not make much headway, and the public outrage grew with each passing day, the responsibility of investigation was vested with Kundapur assistant superintendent of police, Ram Niwas Sepat. “During investigation, it was found that the name of Misban featured repeatedly in Prathvi’s diary. She used to receive SMS and calls from his mobile phone often. Just before death too, there was a call to her cell phone from Misban. At the same time, the accusation that she was suffering from harassment at her sports hostel has not received substantial evidence,” he explained.
He analyzed that Misban and Prathvi knew each other since some time, but that the former was trying to use this relationship in some other way. “Prathvi was shocked at this turn of events. As per our findings, she was deeply hurt by this development, and worries over this issue were behind her decision to commit suicide,” he explained.
