Bangalore, Dec 5: Sneha Care Home, a residential care facility for HIV positive children in Association with Bangalore School Sport Foundation organized a ‘5K Marathon Run and Champion in Me Sport Meet’ to mark World AIDS Day here at Kanteerava Stadium on Sunday December 4.
The sports meet aimed to widen the horizon of HIV positive children and give them a chance to boldly participate in competitions, which provide them a platform to exhibit their talents.
The helped these kids to recognize their keen interest areas, to fine tune their skills, to meet and interact within the renowned personalities from the sport arena.
Cricketer Robin Uthappa inaugurated the programme, national athlete Ashwini Nachappa and actor Raghu Mukherji flagged off the marathon.
Director of Sneha Care Home Fr Mathew Perumpil in his address explained the relevance of the event. He emphasized on the responsibility of the society towards the future of children living with HIV.
The chief of Samastha Project KHPT Dr Reynold Washington in his message for the day cited the world AIDS Day theme for the year ‘Getting to Zero –Zero deaths, Zero new infection, Zero Discrimination’ and pointed out that the care provided to these children will add more quality and years to their life.
The competitions commenced at 10.30 am and was inaugurated by deputy commissioner (Crime Dept.) Pranob Mohanty. Former National Hockey captain Ashish Ballal in his address the event is an inspiration for all HIV patients.
Children of various age groups and centres participated in the sports meet. The events were conducted by Elvis Joseph and his team from Bangalore Schools Sports Foundation.
National Kabaddi player Honnappa was the chief guest for the valedictory function held in the evening.
The centres participated for the ‘Champion in Me’ event were Infant Jesus Children Home, Bangalore, Calvary Chapel Trust, Bangalore and Tamilnadu, Navasanidhya Children Care Home, Bijapur and Sneha Care Home, Bangalore.
Fr Mathew proposed vote of thanks, Rayan Miranda compered. Around 700 people participated for the run, and a large number of volunteers lent their support for the event.
The prizes were given to the best 10 runners of the 5K run.
