Mumbai, Oct 18: An interactive session for the students of St Lawrence high school in Borivali West was held recently on the prevention of sexual abuse of children.
Helen Fonseca, a member of the child welfare committee of the government of Maharashtra, a noted social activist dedicated to the welfare of children and women, and a versatile actress known for her roles in renowned Hindi films, conducted the session. The primary aim of the session was to educate students on recognizing, preventing, and responding to instances of sexual abuse.
During this session, students were made aware of how to identify warning signs associated with the unwanted behaviours of strangers who lure children for sexual offenses. She advised the students to avoid nights out with friends and never to try substances that are harmful to their health. She emphasized the importance of distinguishing between safe and unsafe interactions, both online and offline. They were also informed about sextortion and were advised to avoid taking suspicious video calls. She also advised that children should confide in their parents and trusted elders whenever they encounter abuse.
Fonseca shared practical prevention strategies, including tips for safeguarding personal information. She also provided an overview of the legal framework, discussing relevant laws pertaining to sexual harassment, such as POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) and the Juvenile Justice System, while outlining the rights of victims and the legal recourse available to them.
In alignment with the vision of the honourable founder-chairman of the school, Dr AF Pinto, and managing director, Dr Grace Pinto, several interactive sessions are held at the school throughout the year. Students found the session valuable and empowering.
