Mangaluru, Oct 9: The vibrant Konkani community has explored new avenues in education, business, art, and services, alongside agriculture. Globally, their presence is marked by united efforts through various associations, serving the community.

Art, culture, and folklore are deeply ingrained in the Konkani community, showcased in innovative ways that connect the young and the old. Producing a Konkani cinema seemed like a distant dream for many due to the glamour, investment, limited target audience, and the geographical spread of the Konkani-speaking population.

Despite these limitations, it is surprising that over 100 Konkani movies have been produced since 1955. Mangalureans, Goans, GSBs, and RSBs have all contributed to these productions. The latest film, Payann (Journey), has captivated audiences by beautifully presenting a timeless legacy.

In its first 10 days, Payann has opened a new chapter of hope in the Konkani entertainment industry. Produced by Neeta Peres and Yodelling King Melwyn Peres under the banner of Sangeet Ghar Productions, the film’s screenplay and direction were helmed by versatile Konkani talent, Sangeet Guru Joel Pereira.

Payann revolves around the life of a singer, offering a taste of Mangalurean music while exploring various aspects of life. The struggles, hardships, charity work, love, zeal, and passion are all depicted effectively. The positive attitude instilled by the protagonist's teacher, woven throughout his journey, is the essence that has captured the hearts of viewers.

As American filmmaker Martin Scorsese once said, "Cinema is a matter of what's in the frame and what's out." In today’s world, captivating the audience is just as important as capturing scenes on camera. Payann, despite budget limitations and a restricted viewership, has managed to impress within its first two weeks of screening. Kudos to the Melwyn Peres couple and Joel Pereira.

Behind the Scenes

Though Payann centers on a singer's life, it also incorporates real-life incidents of several well-known artists. Joel Pereira says this real-life connection gives the film its unique flavour. The film does not rely on glamorous sets but focuses on how Konkani music has flourished in Mangaluru. Melwyn Peres’ songs, though old compositions, fit seamlessly into the narrative. The modern techno-based music adds a refreshing touch, providing a soul-soothing experience, with melodious voices from Rynel, Deepak, Lavita, Melroy and Bindu.

The production team is supported by Roshan Dsouza's background score, cameraman Ramanna, and editor Mavin Pinto, who, along with the singers and technicians, form the strong pillars of this film.

Thrill, Suspense, and Love

Payann offers more than one perspective. The storyline grips the audience from the opening line: "Where is Christy?" As investigative reporter Lorsu approaches Christy's teacher, Dhanu Siker, the plot unfolds through memories. Christy’s journey as a singer, intertwined with love, murder, and health issues, is narrated beautifully by his teacher. The film's unexpected ending leaves viewers reflecting on the timeless legacy an artiste can leave behind.

Memorable Characters

The entire cast performed exceptionally well, with many newcomers facing the camera for the first time. Brian Sequeira, Rynel Sequeira, Jasmine D’Souza, Kate Pereira, Shaina, and Melisha have delivered mesmerizing performances. Leslie Rego, Gerry Rasquinha, Jeevan Vas, Walter Nandalike, Jossie Rego, Albert Peres, Clament Lobo, Allwyn Danty, Denver Peres, and Arun Noronha also have brought magic to their roles. Choreographer Avil DCruz and his troupe enhanced the film with their fitting dance steps.

Ratings and Reviews

Payann has received praise across social media, with positive reviews flooding in. Its high rating on Book My Show is proof of its success, and IMDB has ranked Payann as the second-best Konkani movie. Critics and intellectuals alike have hailed it as a new milestone in Konkani cinema, setting a benchmark for future productions.

With this success, Payann is set for international release, eagerly awaited by Konkani associations worldwide. May this journey continue to create memories and leave an endless legacy.
