Kundapur, Nov 25: In a tragic incident that occurred at Hattiangady near Tallur in the taluk on Thursday November 24, a crying baby stopped breathing, after its mother tried to stop it from crying.
Sumayya, a one year-old baby, lost its life in the incident. She was the last of the four children of its parents. The baby’s father had died a few months back. Shabana, mother of the child, who was worried over the incessant wails of the baby, had tried to force the child to stop crying, by pressing its neck as a last resort.
The baby stopped crying immediately, and did not show any response thereafter. Growing concerned, the mother rushed Shabana to hospital. The baby, it is learnt, died on the way, before medical help could be extended.
Shabana from Badami, who had resorted to begging in Bangalore after her husband died recently to look after her chldlren, had been provided shelter ten days back by 'Namma Bhoomi' society here. It is learnt that Shabana's mental balance is erratic. While the office bearers of the society claim that Shabana pressed the neck of the child, Shabana says the child had been provided with medicine the previous day for cold and fever, and that it had died on its own in bed before Thursday morning.
