Madikeri, Nov 16: Field Marshal K M Cariappa, first commander-in-chief and first Indian chief of army staff of India, who hails from the district, and who has always been held in awe by the youngsters of the state, was insulted by some miscreants here on the night of Monday November 15. On Tuesday morning, it came to light that a shoe had been hung from the statue of Cariappa standing at Sudarshan Circle here.
As soon as the news broke, citizens and office bearers of various organizations gathered near the statue and held protest. They blocked the road and demanded the presence of superintendent of police, Manjunath Annigeri. They raised slogans at the apathy of the police department. The protestors withdrew their agitation after additional deputy commissioner, Chandre Gowda, promised to arrest the culprits soon.
The policemen rushed to the spot as soon as they got the information, and removed the shoe from the left hand of the statue. The incident has drawn flak from all over the district. The town-based Chamber of Commerce and Industry has given call for a bandh from 10 am to 1 pm on Wednesday November 16, to register protest against this cowardly act.
