Udupi, Aug 17: A library established at the Udupi Patrika Bhavan was inaugurated by Dr Y Sudarshan Rao, the administrative director of Udupi Inchara Hospital, as part of the ‘Home as a Library’ initiative. The event was organized under the joint auspices of the Udupi District Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Udupi taluk unit, Udupi District Working Journalists' Association, Udupi Patrika Bhavan Committee, and the Udupi District Red Cross Society.
In his speech, Dr Y Sudarshan Rao emphasized the negative impact of computers and mobile phones on human cognitive abilities, stressing the importance of cultivating the habit of reading. He asserted that every household should establish a library, as reading books enhances language proficiency, unlike mobile phones and televisions.
During the event, Udupi District Working Journalists' Association president Rajesh Shetty Alevoor was presented with a book by Purnima, assistant director of the Udupi Kannada and culture department. Other speakers included Udupi District Red Cross Society president Basrur Rajeev Shetty, secretary Dr Gananath Ekkaar, assistant director of the department of information Manjunath, and Vishwanath Shenoy, founder of Udupi Sanskruti Vishva Pratishthan.
The event was attended by Janardhan Kodavoor, honourary secretary of the Udupi Taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishat, members Siddabasayya Swamy Chikkamath, Vasanth, Mohan Udupa Handaadi, Udupi Working Journalists' Association treasurer Umesh Marpalli, state committee member Kiran Manjanbail, and Udupi Patrika Bhavan committee director Ajith Aaradi.
Raviraj HP, president of the Udupi Taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishat, delivered the introductory remarks, while Nazir Polya, general secretary of the Udupi District Working Journalists' Association, welcomed the gathering. Raghavendra Prabhu Karvalu, coordinator of the ‘Home as a Library’ initiative, offered a vote of thanks. The event was compered by journalist Rahim Ujire.
