Mangalore, Nov 7: The district unit of Bharath Scouts and Guides celebrated World Foundation Day at District Scouts and Guides Bhavan, Lalbhag here on November 7.
Octavia Albuquerque, former national chief commissioner, Bharath Scouts and Guides and former MLC member, Karnataka and K A Dayanand, KAS, assistant deputy commissioner, were the guests of honour. Ramasesha Shetty, Irene D'Cunna, K Vasanth Rao and Vasudev Boloor were present on the dais.
J K Bhat, senior guide explained the origin and development of the Scouts and Guides. In 1907, British soldier Lord Baden Powell started his mission to transform children into socially acceptable citizens. From then on, it kept mushrooming in countries worldwide, and due to the large number, it was divided as cubs and bulbul, scouts and guides, and Rovers for people above 17, he said.
Octavia Albuquerque was felicitated with a shawl and a memento for her contribution to Scouts and Guides. Addressing the gathering, she said scouts and guides are heroes and heroines. "This is a platform to create a brighter world with peace, unity and love," she said.
The Scouts and Guides badge was unveiled on the occasion and members were felicitated with certificates and citations. Nearly 400 students of different age groups were awarded with certificates. M Pranjal of Mahesh PU College, Gyan Crasta and a few other students received Rajya Puraskara for their service in various fields.
